# India’s Cash Transfer Programs Offer Relief but Put Pressure on State Finances India is increasingly relying on direct cash transfer programs to support low income families and reduce poverty. Over the last decade, these welfare schemes have become an important source of financial support for women, farmers, and unemployed youth across the country. Government spending on cash transfer initiatives has increased dramatically. Data from ProjectDEEP shows that funding has grown from less than $2 billion in 2015 to almost $30 billion today. These programs now account for nearly 1% of India’s gross domestic product and more than 10% of total social sector spending. The expansion has been rapid. In 2019, only four Indian states offered regular cash transfer programs. Today, 17 states and the federal territory of Delhi provide monthly payments to eligible citizens. Supporters say these programs help families manage rising living costs and economic uncertainty. Monthly payments generally range between 1,000 and 2,500 rupees, depending on the state. According to recent research, a typical transfer of 1,500 rupees can cover a large share of monthly expenses for low income households. ## Cash Transfers Strengthen Household Spending Economic experts believe these payments help maintain household consumption, especially during periods of inflation and economic pressure. Rising energy costs and weather related challenges continue to affect many families, particularly those dependent on agriculture. For poorer households, the additional income provides financial stability and helps cover essential expenses such as food, transportation, education, and healthcare. ## Growing Support for Unemployed Youth Several state governments have also introduced programs aimed at unemployed young people. Around 10 states now provide financial assistance to job seekers, with many of these initiatives launched during the past three years. Experts say these payments act as temporary support while young people search for employment. This has become increasingly important as technological changes and climate related disruptions create uncertainty in the job market. ## Concerns Over Rising Government Spending Despite their benefits, economists and policymakers remain concerned about the growing cost of these programs. India’s Economic Survey has identified cash transfer schemes as a major factor behind fiscal pressure in several states. Many states running these welfare programs already face revenue deficits, raising questions about their long term sustainability. While the schemes provide immediate relief to vulnerable groups, governments must balance social support with responsible financial management. ## The Road Ahead Cash transfer programs have become a key part of India’s poverty reduction strategy. They offer crucial support to millions of people and help strengthen household spending during difficult economic conditions. However, as costs continue to rise, policymakers will need to find ways to maintain these benefits without placing excessive strain on public finances.

# UK Actress Emaa Hussen Charged Over Alleged A$296 Million Meth Smuggling Plot in Australia British actress Emaa Hussen has been charged in Australia after authorities accused her of involvement in a major methamphetamine smuggling operation worth nearly A$300 million. The 34 year old actress appeared in a Sydney court after police charged her with attempting to import a commercial quantity of methamphetamine into Australia. If convicted, she could face life imprisonment. ## Massive Drug Shipment Discovered at Sydney Port Australian authorities launched an investigation in April after border officials detected suspicious items inside two shipping containers arriving from Ghana at Sydney's Port Botany. The containers were declared as carrying charcoal. However, X ray scans revealed unusual contents. Officers inspected the shipment and discovered a white crystalline substance hidden inside bags of charcoal. Laboratory tests later confirmed the substance was methamphetamine. Authorities seized approximately 320 kilograms of meth, with an estimated street value of A$296 million. ## Police Allege Actress Supervised Shipment Investigators claim Hussen visited a storage facility in Sydney's western suburbs after the shipment arrived. According to police, she supervised several men as they unloaded the containers. The group allegedly transferred multiple bags into a vehicle before transporting them to a property in Blacktown. Police later arrested Hussen at the location. During the operation, officers also seized electronic devices and a notebook that may assist the investigation. ## Other Suspects Also Charged The investigation led to additional arrests in Adelaide, South Australia. Police charged a 30 year old woman and a 32 year old man for allegedly using false identities to rent storage units connected to the shipment. Authorities believe the storage facilities were intended to receive and hold the imported drugs. ## Actress Known for TV and Film Roles Emaa Hussen previously appeared as Naz in *E20*, a spin off of the popular TV show EastEnders. She also acted alongside Jason Statham in the 2013 action thriller Hummingbird, which was released in the United States under the title *Redemption*. ## Authorities Praise Drug Interception Effort Australian Federal Police said the seizure prevented approximately 3.2 million potential drug deals from reaching communities across the country. Officials praised border officers for identifying the concealed shipment and disrupting what they described as a significant criminal operation. Authorities also noted that criminal networks often hide illegal substances inside everyday goods to avoid detection. Despite these efforts, investigators say advanced screening methods continue to play a key role in stopping large scale drug imports. The case remains under investigation. Hussen remains in custody after being denied bail and is expected to return to court in August.

Jio Platforms Moves Toward Major IPO Mukesh Ambani’s Jio Platforms, part of Reliance Industries, has moved closer to launching a public share sale. The company board has approved a draft prospectus for an initial public offering. Ambani shared this development during Reliance’s annual shareholder meeting. Market reports suggest the IPO could raise around four billion dollars. Jio already serves more than five hundred million users, making it India’s largest telecom operator. Strong Market Attention on the Listing Investors are closely tracking the IPO because it may show how much demand exists for new listings in India’s stock market. Analysts view this move as a key test after recent market fluctuations. A strong response could support more large company listings in the future. Ambani said the listing would show that India can build large scale technology companies with global reach and value. Growth From Telecom to Technology Powerhouse Jio launched in 2016 with low cost mobile data plans. The strategy quickly disrupted India’s telecom sector and attracted millions of users in a short time. Since then, the company has expanded beyond telecom services. It now works in cloud computing, enterprise solutions, and artificial intelligence. This expansion has helped Jio move from a telecom provider to a broader digital infrastructure company. Global Partnerships and Expansion Jio and Bharti Airtel both signed agreements with SpaceX to bring Starlink internet services to India. This step signals growing interest in satellite based connectivity across the country. Earlier this month, Meta also announced plans to use capacity from a new AI focused data center being developed by Reliance in Gujarat. The facility is expected to support large scale computing demand. Impact on India’s Capital Markets The Jio IPO comes shortly after the National Stock Exchange filed documents for its own public listing. That IPO may raise more than three billion dollars if it proceeds as expected. Together, these listings could become some of the largest in India in recent years, similar to major global share offerings seen in the automotive sector. Market experts say Jio’s performance after listing will influence investor confidence in upcoming IPOs. What Investors Are Watching Jio’s listing has gained attention because of its scale, user base, and fast growth in digital services. Investors will focus on valuation, pricing, and demand during the offer period. A strong debut could increase activity in India’s IPO market. A weaker response may slow down upcoming listings.

Situation inside the Labour Party Pressure is increasing on UK Prime Minister and Labour leader Keir Starmer after a major political shift triggered fresh debate inside the party. Following a strong by election win by Andy Burnham, discussion has intensified about the future leadership of the party and the government. Some Labour MPs and ministers are now openly questioning whether a leadership change should be planned. Growing pressure from MPs and ministers A rising number of Labour MPs are encouraging Starmer to consider setting a clear timeline for leaving office. They want an orderly transition rather than a contested leadership battle. Some insiders believe a managed handover could reduce internal conflict and avoid division inside the party. At the same time, allies of Burnham are asking party figures to pause and reconsider over the weekend before escalating tensions further. Starmer rejects calls to step aside Starmer has rejected suggestions that he should resign or set a departure date. He has stated that he will not walk away from the role and would contest any leadership challenge. He also pointed to the mandate he received at the general election and said he remains focused on delivering stability and policy goals. He highlighted progress on economic stability and immigration control as part of his record in office. Warning against internal conflict During a call with Labour staff, Starmer urged unity within the party. He warned that internal division could damage both the party and the country. He argued that turning on each other would repeat mistakes made by previous governments. He also encouraged members to focus on upcoming electoral priorities instead of internal disputes. Leadership speculation and key figures Speculation continues around possible future challengers, including Labour mayoral figures and senior ministers. Another name mentioned in discussions is Wes Streeting, although he and Burnham allies have avoided media interviews in recent days. Senior minister Heidi Alexander is also reported to have discussed internal concerns during cabinet level conversations, though details remain private. Upcoming political focus Attention is now shifting toward the Greater Manchester mayoral contest scheduled for 30 July, which is expected to influence the broader political climate inside Labour. Party members are watching closely to see whether internal tensions settle or escalate further in the coming weeks.

Olivier Giroud and Kylian Mbappe friendship behind France goal record Record broken, respect remains Olivier Giroud reflected on the moment his France goal scoring record was surpassed by Kylian Mbappe. Mbappe reached 58 goals for Les Bleus after scoring against Senegal, moving past Giroud to become France all time top scorer. Giroud said he messaged Mbappe right after the match. He congratulated him and expressed happiness for his achievement. He also joked about keeping the competition alive and reminded Mbappe about a promised shirt exchange. Mbappe acknowledged the message through a member of the coaching staff and said he would call Giroud soon. A shared promise and mutual admiration Giroud mentioned that Mbappe had already promised to give him the shirt he wore when he broke the record. He plans to ask again when they speak. Despite the rivalry on paper, Giroud emphasized there is strong respect between them. He said people often ask about their relationship, but the answer is simple. They share genuine admiration. The celebration that says it all Giroud pointed to a celebration photo from the 2022 World Cup match against Poland as the best reflection of their bond. In that match, Mbappe provided the assist for Giroud’s goal. Giroud scored, then celebrated with a knee slide toward the corner flag. Mbappe ran to him and jumped into his arms. Giroud recalled telling Mbappe that he loved him like a brother in that moment. He described it as a special memory that showed their connection beyond football. Passing the legacy forward Giroud said it feels meaningful that Mbappe now sits above him in France scoring history. He also noted that his name remains between Mbappe and Thierry Henry on the all time list, which he views with pride. He ended with a simple thought. Records change, but respect between players stays.

Bolivia and US sign $20 million drug trafficking cooperation deal New agreement to fight drug networks Bolivia has agreed a new security partnership with the United States worth up to $20 million. The funding will support training and equipment for Bolivian forces working against drug trafficking and organised crime. The deal marks a clear shift in relations between the two countries after nearly two decades of limited cooperation. Shift in Bolivia US relations Relations changed significantly after former President Evo Morales removed the US Drug Enforcement Administration from Bolivia 18 years ago. Bolivia is still one of the world’s main producers of coca leaves, which are used to make cocaine. Under President Rodrigo Paz, ties with Washington are now improving. Bolivia has also joined the US led “Shield of the Americas” security initiative focused on regional crime and drug networks. Training and security support The US embassy confirmed it will work closely with Bolivia to provide training, equipment, and wider support for law enforcement. The Bolivian foreign ministry said the goal is to strengthen institutions responsible for public security, investigations, and tackling organised crime. The agreement was signed in La Paz shortly after Bolivia appointed Ernesto Justiniano as defence minister, who previously served as the country’s drug czar. Regional cooperation and political support Earlier this year, President Paz attended the first Shield of the Americas summit in Florida, hosted by US President Donald Trump, along with other regional leaders. The alliance has publicly supported Paz during recent political unrest in Bolivia. In May, member countries expressed concern over protests and road blockades, saying they aimed to destabilise the elected government.
