Telegram Challenges India’s Temporary Ban Over Exam Leak Concerns Government blocks app after alleged NEET paper leak India has temporarily blocked access to Telegram after concerns that leaked exam papers were being shared on the platform. The action came just days before a major medical entrance retest involving millions of students. Officials say the step is meant to protect the fairness of the exam system. The issue is linked to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), which was earlier cancelled following allegations of a paper leak. Legal challenge reaches Delhi High Court Telegram has taken the matter to the Delhi High Court. The case is scheduled to continue hearing on Thursday. The government argues that cheating networks used Telegram to circulate leaked content. The National Testing Agency supports the move, saying the platform was used in organised fraud linked to the exam. At the same time, officials also acknowledged that the restriction may cause problems for users who depend on the app for normal communication, study, and work. Telegram rejects ban, calls it ineffective Telegram CEO Pavel Durov criticized the decision. He said the ban would not stop the leak networks because those involved often shift to other platforms quickly. He described Telegram as a useful platform and said it had already removed hundreds of channels in India that were sharing leaked exam material or scams. He also said the company was improving its systems, including making the “edited” label more visible to reduce misuse. Wider backlash over exam system The NEET cancellation triggered protests across India. Students and activists raised concerns about repeated issues in the exam process and system level weaknesses. Authorities have arrested more than a dozen people as part of an ongoing investigation led by the Central Bureau of Investigation. Security measures for upcoming retest A retest is planned for Sunday. Local reports suggest security will be tightened, including the use of Indian Air Force aircraft and helicopters to transport question papers securely.

Israel Intensifies Strikes in Southern Lebanon Amid US Criticism Ongoing Cross Border Violence Escalates Israeli forces carried out new air and drone strikes in southern Lebanon, according to Lebanese state media. The attacks hit several areas, including Mansouri, Aaziyyeh, Nabatieh al Fawqa, and Kfar Tebnit. Several people were injured. Israel has not issued a direct comment on these latest strikes. However, its military confirmed that five of its soldiers were injured in a drone attack carried out by Hezbollah, the Iran backed armed group operating from Lebanon. Political Pressure From United States US President Donald Trump publicly criticized Israel’s actions in Lebanon. Speaking at an international summit in France, he said Israel needed to act more responsibly in the region. He also said the conflict with Hezbollah has continued for too long and warned that civilian suffering is increasing. Trump stated he maintains a strong relationship with Israel’s leadership but disagreed with recent military decisions. Regional Tensions Around US Iran Agreement The strikes come after a reported US Iran understanding aimed at reducing wider regional conflict. Pakistan has said the agreement also includes steps related to Lebanon. Despite this, violence between Israel and Hezbollah has continued since the announcement. Both sides have exchanged attacks, including rockets and air strikes. Earlier strikes on Beirut added further pressure on diplomatic efforts to stabilize the situation. Leadership Statements and Escalation Risks Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli forces would remain in Lebanon as long as necessary. Iran’s military leadership warned Israel of a strong response if attacks in southern Lebanon continue. Lebanon’s health ministry reports that more than 3,800 people have died since the conflict escalated. The figures include both fighters and civilians. Israeli officials report casualties on both sides of the border, including soldiers and civilians. Background of the Conflict The conflict intensified after Hezbollah launched rockets toward Israel following earlier regional tensions involving Iran. Israel responded with widespread air strikes and ground operations in southern Lebanon. Since then, cross border fighting has continued, drawing in regional and international attention.

Japan Ice Cream Companies Face Price Fixing Investigation Major brands under scrutiny Japan’s competition regulator has launched an investigation into several leading ice cream manufacturers over suspected price coordination. The firms involved include Meiji, Ezaki Glico, Morinaga Milk Industry, Lotte, Akagi Nyugyo, and Morinaga. The Japan Fair Trade Commission carried out on site inspections after concerns that these companies may have worked together to increase prices in the frozen dessert market. Suspected price increases Reports suggest the companies raised prices multiple times over the years. Some increases were between five and ten percent. Authorities believe these changes may not fully match the rise in raw material costs. The investigation is focused on whether the firms coordinated these price hikes instead of acting independently. Company responses The companies involved have denied wrongdoing at this stage. They stated that they will fully cooperate with the investigation and respond to all regulatory requests. Meiji confirmed it had undergone an inspection and said it takes the matter seriously. Ezaki Glico and Morinaga Milk Industry also said they are cooperating with authorities. Market background and timing The investigation comes at a time when Japan is experiencing extreme summer heat. Ice cream demand usually rises during this season, making the market highly competitive. Japan has recently faced record high temperatures, which have also increased attention on food pricing and inflation pressures in everyday goods.

Nigerian Army Rescues Widow of Late General After Kidnapping Tragedy The Nigerian Army has successfully rescued Amina Abubakar, the wife of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, weeks after armed kidnappers abducted the couple in Nigeria's Katsina State. The rescue operation brought relief to the family after a tragic period that saw the former military officer lose his life while being held captive. Military officials confirmed that Mrs. Abubakar is receiving treatment at a military hospital after sustaining injuries during the operation. Rescue Operation Brings Hope According to military authorities, troops intensified search efforts and tracked the kidnappers to their location. During the operation, the criminals opened fire and shot Mrs. Abubakar before fleeing as soldiers advanced. Despite her injuries, soldiers successfully rescued her and transferred her to a military medical facility for treatment. Officials stated that medical teams are closely monitoring her condition and providing all necessary care. Military spokesperson Samaila Uba said the armed forces remain committed to ensuring her full recovery and supporting her family throughout the process. Family Expresses Gratitude The rescue sparked emotional reactions from family members. Bilkisu Abubakar, one of the couple's daughters, shared a message of gratitude and relief following her mother's rescue. She thanked God for protecting her mother and prayed for her complete recovery after the traumatic experience. Family members continue to support Mrs. Abubakar as she receives medical treatment. Retired General Died in Captivity The kidnapping took a devastating turn when retired Major General Rabe Abubakar died while still in captivity. Authorities believe his death resulted from existing health conditions, including diabetes and high blood pressure. The retired officer passed away before security forces could complete the rescue mission. Government officials later buried his remains and paid tribute to his service to the nation. Kidnappers Released Disturbing Video Earlier this month, a video appeared online showing the retired general and his wife pleading for help. In the recording, they urged the Katsina State government to release detained bandits and confiscated livestock in exchange for their freedom. The video highlighted the difficult conditions faced by kidnapping victims and raised concerns about growing insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria. Security Forces Continue Hunt for Criminals No group has claimed responsibility for the abduction. However, criminal gangs commonly known as "bandits" frequently carry out kidnappings, cattle theft, and attacks on rural communities across northwestern Nigeria. Security agencies have vowed to continue tracking those responsible. Military officials stated that ongoing operations aim to capture the kidnappers and prevent similar incidents in the future. President Reacts to General's Death President Bola Tinubu expressed shock over the retired general's death. He described the incident as a painful reminder of the security challenges posed by armed criminal groups operating across the country. The president also reaffirmed the government's commitment to strengthening security measures and protecting citizens from criminal violence.

Thames Water Rescue Deal Faces Government Objection, Moves Closer to Nationalisation Government Raises Concerns Over Rescue Plan The UK government has rejected key parts of a proposed £10bn rescue plan for Thames Water, pushing the company closer to possible nationalisation. Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds informed the regulator that the deal, backed by the firm’s lenders, does not meet the required standards for customers or environmental protection. She warned that the proposal could shift too much cost onto customers and delay urgent upgrades to infrastructure and environmental systems. Financial Struggles and Debt Pressure Thames Water, the UK’s largest water supplier, serves around 16 million people across London and parts of southern England. The company has been under pressure for years due to rising debt, poor infrastructure, and repeated environmental failures. Its total debt stands at nearly £20bn. A group of creditors has proposed writing off £9.4bn of that debt and injecting new funding to stabilise the business. Details of the Proposed Rescue Plan The lender group, operating under the name London & Valley Water, has suggested a package that includes about £3.35bn in equity funding and a £6.55bn debt facility. The plan is designed to support operations through 2030. In return, creditors are seeking reduced regulatory pressure, including softer penalties for pollution breaches and more flexible performance standards. Government Opposition and Key Risks The government has expressed three main concerns. First, it believes customers may end up paying unfairly high costs. Second, it fears delays to essential investment in ageing infrastructure. Third, it warns that environmental improvements could be pushed further back. Officials also said they are prepared for all possible outcomes, including temporary public ownership if the company fails. Environmental and Service Record Thames Water has faced repeated criticism for sewage spills, leaking pipes, and poor service performance. In May last year, the company received a record £122.7m fine from the regulator Ofwat for breaching rules on pollution and shareholder payouts. Creditor Response The creditor consortium argues that its plan offers the fastest and most stable route to fixing the company. They insist it would improve services without requiring taxpayer money and without increasing customer bills beyond current regulatory limits. They also warn that moving to a special administration process could slow down recovery and worsen long-term outcomes.

Australia Investigates Allegations of Assault on Gaza Aid Flotilla Activists Key Investigation Launched Australian authorities have started looking into serious allegations made by activists who were detained after a Gaza-bound aid flotilla was intercepted by Israeli forces in May. The Australian Federal Police confirmed they have opened inquiries based on claims raised by members of the group. The activists raised concerns after meeting Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong and senior officials earlier this week. They allege they were mistreated during detention, including accusations of sexual assault, torture, and abuse. Claims Made by Activists One of the activists, Juliet Lamont, said officials had agreed to examine their complaints. She stated that authorities planned an independent review into what she described as kidnapping and severe mistreatment during detention. Lamont also said the group felt their accounts were taken seriously during the meeting, and that police had committed to a victim focused process. Response from Australian Authorities The Australian Federal Police confirmed that inquiries have begun and said they are treating the matter with a trauma informed approach. Officials added that updates will be shared when appropriate. Foreign Minister Penny Wong also raised concerns with Israeli officials and called for an independent and transparent investigation. Her office said the meeting with activists was an opportunity to hear their accounts directly. Israeli Position The Israeli embassy in Australia rejected the allegations. It said there is no credible evidence supporting claims of sexual assault or torture. The embassy also said no formal complaints had been submitted to it. Israeli officials described the activists as political provocateurs and said their claims had not been verified. A spokesperson also referred to earlier comments by Israeli leadership, noting internal criticism of conduct shown in a video involving detainees. Background of the Incident The activists were part of a larger group of hundreds of people detained when Israeli forces intercepted a flotilla carrying humanitarian aid toward Gaza on 18 May. Eleven Australians were among those held during the operation. The incident has drawn attention due to ongoing tensions around aid delivery efforts and maritime blockades affecting Gaza.
