Attending the World Cup 2026 has become a dream experience for football supporters, but it comes with a heavy price tag. Many fans across the United States, Canada, and Mexico say the total cost of tickets, travel, hotels, and matchday expenses is far higher than expected.
One Match Costs Around $4,000 for Some Fans
A Norwegian fan living in Atlanta shared that attending a single match cost him and his family nearly $4,000. He bought three tickets for about $380 each. He also used frequent flyer points for flights from Atlanta to Boston. Even then, the travel alone required a large amount of points.
Hotel costs for two nights exceeded $1,100. Local transport to the stadium added more expenses, with about $80 per person for round trips. He called the total cost “insane” and suggested the tournament feels more suited for corporate attendees than individual supporters.
High Ticket Prices for Families and Supporters
Another fan, a British supporter living in Atlanta, is also facing steep expenses. He paid around $1,200 for a category two ticket to watch England against Croatia in Dallas.
At the time of purchase, he felt the price was excessive. Later, he accepted it as part of the experience. He will travel with his son and plans a road trip across cities, including camping to reduce costs.
They will also attend another match between Tunisia and the Netherlands, where tickets cost about $235 each.
Travel and Accommodation Push Costs Higher
Fans say tickets are only part of the total expense. Flights, hotel stays, and transport between cities quickly raise the overall cost. Some supporters are planning long road trips or camping to manage expenses.
In large host countries like the US, Canada, and Mexico, distances between stadiums make travel even more expensive and time consuming.
Sporting Events Becoming More Expensive
Many fans say they are used to high prices at major sporting events. In some cases, premium sports tickets in the US already reach several thousand dollars, making World Cup pricing feel similar to other elite events.
Still, many supporters continue to spend heavily, driven by the chance to experience the tournament live, often describing it as a once in a lifetime moment.
