Shortly after the Tom Brady roast, Leno and wife Mavis attended the Feminist Majority Foundation’s 16th Annual Global Women’s Rights Awards & Gala in Los Angeles on May 14.
After “GROAT: The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady” debuted on Netflix, discussions regarding comedy and cancellation culture were reignited by stars like Ben Affleck, Nikki Glaser, and Kim Kardashian.
“Again, if it’s really funny, all bets are off,” Leno stated. “You see, the problem arises only when something is offensive and unfunny. People then [say], “Oh, I’m offended now!” I take offense at A. Because it’s inappropriate, it’s not funny. ‘It’s inappropriate, but it’s incredibly funny,’ they will then say.
Leno complimented Glaser specifically for the roast, stating, “she killed me.” She was hilarious.
Although a lot of people might think it’s inappropriate, it can be justified if it’s extremely funny.
“I’m not big roast person, it’s not something I do, but it’s just a different kind of comedy, and it’s fine, it’s good.”
He stated in a 2021 interview with the Los Angeles Times that he adapts his material to suit his audience, thus he wasn’t concerned about the possibility of being canceled.
“They’ll say things like, ‘Look, we don’t want any drug jokes, we don’t want any sex jokes,’ when I perform in Utah. At the time, he told the publication, “I go, ‘OK, I’ll take those out,’ and I do something else.”
