On the second day of the ongoing Sydney Test, David Warner bid farewell with a 34-run effort, leading Australia’s innings as Pakistan was able to contain their batting.
Warner was given a rousing reception by the home crowd but failed to score a final Test century. The cricket player left the Sydney Cricket Ground looking extremely upset.
After Pakistan’s first-inning score of 313 at lunch, Australia was at 78-1 with Usman Khawaja at 35 and Marnus Labuschagne at three. Disappointed Australian fans watched as Warner was removed from the game following a delivery that took advantage of extra bounce and turn, leading to an edge and a catch at slip.
Warner, who made his Test debut in 2011, departs the format with an outstanding 8,729 run record.
His dismissal came after Pakistan’s run of fielding errors continued on 20, when rookie Saim Ayub dropped a catch, giving Pakistan another opportunity.
Australia had a difficult beginning as they were restricted by a strong bowling assault from Pakistan that included Warner and Khawaja. In the opening hour of play, the hitting pair could only muster 33 runs.
This Test completes a three-match series in which Australia won the second Test in Melbourne by a close margin of 79 runs over the Christmas break.
Australia still has enough batting depth in their squad for the second innings of the current Test to mount a strong defense even with Warner out of the picture.Pakistan’s squandered opportunities and poor fielding continue to be a talking point as the match goes on, particularly in the wake of Ayub’s error that led to his early removal in his opening innings.
