Djokovic, who has won a men’s record 24 majors and virtually every tennis trophy, finally won Olympic gold in his fifth Games.
The 37-year-old Serb had his greatest performance of the year, defeating French Open and Wimbledon champion Alcaraz 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-2) in front of a sold-out crowd in Paris.
He sealed the trophy with a forehand winner, then turned to his box, arms outstretched in shock, before tossing his racquet to the ground after a grueling battle that lasted just under three hours.
After hugging Spain’s Alcaraz, Djokovic erupted into tears and went to his knees.
He then unfurled the Serbian flag and climbed into the stands to celebrate with his family and supporters.
Djokovic is only the fifth player to complete the ‘Golden Slam’ in singles, following Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Andre Agassi, and Steffi Graf.
“Everything I felt in that moment when I won surpassed everything I thought or hoped that it would,” Djokovic told the crowd.
“Being on that court, hoisting the Serbian flag, singing the Serbian anthem, and wearing the gold around my neck, I don’t think anything beats that in terms of professional sports.
