Overview of the flotilla interception
Hundreds of activists traveling on a symbolic aid mission to Gaza were detained after Israeli forces stopped their flotilla in international waters. The group, made up of people from many countries, was part of a campaign known as the Global Sumud Flotilla.
Israel later confirmed that all foreign activists had been deported. Officials said the group tried to break a naval blockade on Gaza, which they called unlawful.
Detention and video controversy
A video shared by Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir triggered strong backlash. The footage showed him speaking to detained activists who appeared restrained. The video was widely criticized across several countries.
Reports also emerged claiming poor treatment during detention. An Israel based rights group representing detainees said some activists suffered serious injuries and at least a few needed hospital care. Israeli authorities have not responded publicly to these claims.
International reaction and diplomatic pressure
Several governments reacted strongly to the incident.
The United Kingdom summoned Israel’s diplomatic representative in London and condemned the conduct shown in the video. Officials also raised concerns about detention conditions and demanded clarification.
Poland also called in Israel’s representative and expressed anger over the treatment of its citizens. Polish officials later said two nationals would return home and requested action against the minister involved.
Italy urged the European Union to consider sanctions, calling the treatment of activists unacceptable and raising concerns about alleged harassment and humiliation.
Other countries including the United States, France, Greece, the Netherlands, Canada, Ireland, Turkey, and Spain also raised concerns or demanded updates on their citizens.
Allegations of mistreatment in custody
Some activists who returned to Europe said they were beaten after arriving in Israel. One Italian politician and a journalist described physical abuse after detention.
An Israeli rights group representing detainees reported widespread injuries and claimed multiple individuals required medical treatment. Israeli authorities have not confirmed these allegations.
Government responses and deportations
Israeli officials stated that all detained foreign activists were deported and insisted the naval blockade on Gaza remains lawful. Some senior Israeli leaders also distanced themselves from the video, saying it does not reflect official policy.
Flights were arranged for detainees from several countries, with some citizens transferred through Turkey, Greece, and other locations before returning home.
