Former Disney CEO Bob Iger and Josh Kushner, the brother of US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared, are purchasing the majority stake in one of the most recognizable sports clubs in the world. LA Lakers Set for Record $12.5bn Sale to Kushner and Iger In a deal that was unanimously authorized by the NBA Board of Governors in October 2025. Walter purchased his stake from the Buss family for an estimated $10 billion (£7.45 billion), setting a previous record. Kushner and Iger said: “As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world. “We greatly admire the vision and leadership of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. How Mark Walter Became Lakers Owner “Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles.” In 1979, Jerry Buss purchased the Lakers for $67.5 million (£50 million), which also included the Los Angeles Kings hockey franchise and the Kia Forum, a Los Angeles arena. Before a contract was finalized with Walter, who also holds a part in the LA Dodgers alongside Todd Boehly, ownership was transferred to his six children in a trust upon his death in 2013. Lakers Have 17 NBA Championships “One of the greatest honors of my life has been owning the Los Angeles Lakers,” Walter remarked. The community, the supporters, and a city that views this team as family are what I will take with me, even if it has been an incredible investment. I appreciate being welcomed into this chapter by Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff. Los Angeles owns the Lakers, and I’m confident that the greatest is still to come.” The LA Lakers have won 17 NBA titles, one fewer than the Boston Celtics’ record of 18. US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

Later on, he became aggressive; according to Panettiere, he would smack her head against the wall and once battered her face so severely that she was unable to leave her home for weeks. In her 36 years, she faced more challenges than most, and she tried to deal with them by writing her book, which was released in May. She concluded by assuring readers that she had learned to "walk hand in hand with my triumphs and my tragedies, because they have made me who I am" and that she had come to terms with her past while maintaining optimism for the future.

Top Democrats press Maine senate candidate to drop out of race over sexual assault allegation

Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner is facing growing pressure to withdraw from the upcoming Senate election after a woman accused him of sexual assault. The allegation has prompted several senior Democratic leaders to publicly call for his immediate exit from the race, raising fresh concerns about the party’s campaign strategy ahead of the November elections.

Platner has strongly denied the accusation. He described the claim as “categorically false” and insisted that the reports do not reflect the truth. However, he acknowledged the political impact of the controversy and said he is considering the best path forward for his supporters, his party, and the state of Maine.

Democratic Leaders Withdraw Their Support

The allegation has triggered a swift response from top Democratic officials. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand described the accusation as deeply disturbing. They stressed that violence, abuse, and sexual assault have no place in society and called on Platner to withdraw from the race immediately.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee also announced that it would not provide financial support to Platner’s campaign if he remains on the ballot. This decision could significantly weaken his chances in one of the most closely watched Senate contests of the election cycle.

Several prominent Democratic senators, including Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, and Elissa Slotkin, also urged Platner to step aside. At the same time, Congressman Ro Khanna and Senators Martin Heinrich and Ruben Gallego withdrew their endorsements, increasing pressure on the candidate.

Details of the Allegation

The accusation came from Jenny Racicot, who said she had an on and off relationship with Platner for more than two years. According to her account, Platner entered her home without permission while allegedly intoxicated and sexually assaulted her.

Racicot said the encounter was not consensual and that she ended all contact with Platner afterward. The allegation has become the central issue in the Senate campaign and has drawn nationwide political attention.

Platner has denied every aspect of the accusation and continues to maintain that he did nothing wrong.

Campaign Faces Another Setback

This latest controversy adds to a series of challenges already facing Platner’s campaign. Earlier, questions arose after reports highlighted a tattoo on his chest that resembled a Nazi symbol. Although Platner denied any extremist connection, the issue generated widespread criticism and damaged his public image.

Following the latest allegation, his campaign postponed several public events that had been scheduled for the week.

Race Could Shape Senate Control

Platner is expected to challenge longtime Republican Senator Susan Collins in November. Collins has represented Maine in the Senate for decades and remains one of the state’s most recognizable political figures.

The contest is considered important because Democrats hope to gain enough seats to challenge Republican control of the Senate. Political analysts believe the outcome in Maine could influence the balance of power in Washington.

State election rules also place additional pressure on the Democratic Party. Platner must withdraw before the official deadline if party leaders want to replace him with another candidate on the ballot.

Uncertainty Surrounds the Democratic Campaign

The controversy has created uncertainty for Democrats as they prepare for the general election. While Platner continues to reject the allegation, many party leaders believe the growing scandal could hurt their chances in a race that is already expected to be highly competitive.

Whether Platner decides to remain in the contest or step aside will likely become one of the biggest political developments in Maine before voters head to the polls in November.

Previous Article Charlie Kirk Murder Case Moves Forward as Family Faces Suspect in Court The family of Charlie Kirk came face to face with the man accused of killing him during a court hearing in Utah. It was the first time his widow, Erika Kirk, and other family members had attended court since the case began. The hearing focused on the evidence presented by prosecutors against 23 year old Tyler Robinson. The court will decide whether there is enough evidence for the case to proceed to a full trial. Charlie Kirk's Family Attends Emotional Court Hearing Charlie Kirk's widow, Erika Kirk, appeared in court alongside his parents, Robert and Kathryn Kirk, and his sister, Mary. Donald Trump Jr. also attended the hearing in support of the family. Before the proceedings began, the family released a joint statement. They described every court appearance as a painful reminder of Charlie Kirk's death and the lasting impact it has had on their lives and the lives of his two children. The family also thanked people for their prayers, support, and kindness since the tragedy. They requested privacy while the legal process continues and said they would not make additional public comments at this stage. Prosecutors Present New Evidence During the hearing, prosecutors introduced surveillance footage and witness testimony. According to investigators, the footage showed Tyler Robinson visiting the Utah Valley University campus four times on the day of the shooting. Authorities also claimed he returned to the campus hours after Charlie Kirk was killed. The evidence forms a key part of the prosecution's effort to prove Robinson's involvement in the fatal shooting. Defense Challenges Investigation Robinson has been charged with murder and several other offences. However, he has not yet entered a plea. His defense team questioned how investigators identified him as a suspect. The lawyers also challenged the surveillance footage and raised concerns about security measures at the university. In earlier court proceedings, the defense asked the judge to exclude some evidence from the case. The legal team also requested that the death penalty be removed as a possible punishment. Hearing Will Decide Next Step The current hearing is a preliminary hearing. Its purpose is to determine whether prosecutors have enough evidence to take the case before a jury. If the judge finds sufficient evidence, the case will move to a full criminal trial. Prosecutors continue to seek the death penalty if Robinson is convicted. The hearing is expected to continue throughout the week as both sides present additional witnesses and arguments. Charlie Kirk Murder Case Moves Forward as Family Faces Suspect in Court
