RAWALPINDI: According to party sources, Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has decided to go on a hunger strike in protest of the mistreatment he has received while incarcerated.
According to the sources, the imprisoned former prime minister would announce the strike date only after conferring with the party hierarchy.
They stated he had called a meeting of his party officials a day prior, but the authorities in the Adiala jail had forbidden them from attending. They claimed that Khan waited for three hours to hold the meeting, both inside the prison and outside it with the party leaders.
The PTI founder told the leaders to avoid exposing internal divisions to the public after their plea for a meeting was turned down.
“The PTI founder had summoned leaders of both the factions to jail a day ago to end disagreements between them,” sources claimed.
Speaking to the media outside Adiala jail on Thursday, PTI representatives stated that even though they waited for several hours outside the facility, they were not given permission to meet the party founder in Adiala jail in Rawalpindi.
Since being removed from power as prime minister in April 2022—the only premier to be voted out—Imran has been facing a litany of charges ranging from terrorism to corruption.
The PTI founder was convicted in several charges prior to the national election earlier this year, and he has been behind bars since last August.
