Local activists claim that in recent weeks, the Mashco Piro indigenous tribe has been seen emerging from the rainforest in their isolated region of the Peruvian Amazon in search of food.
A few miles from the location of the photos along the Las Piedras river, Survival International stated that the images demonstrated the necessity of “throwing out” loggers who are about to start operations in the tribe’s land.
The region is home to several logging businesses that possess forest concessions, and in recent days, more than fifty Mashco Piro people have surfaced close to the Yine settlement of Monte Salvado.
According to Survival International, the Mashco Piro, who reside between two natural reserves in Madre de Dios, are rarely seen and don’t talk much to the Yine or anybody else.
Director Caroline Pearce stated, “This is a humanitarian catastrophe waiting to happen. It is imperative that the loggers are driven out and that the Mashco Piro people’s land is finally properly protected.”
