Maryam Nawaz, the chief minister of Punjab, attended the Elite Force’s passing out parade in Lahore today wearing their uniform, seemed unfazed by the criticism.
“This is not a uniform, it is a national service that comes to the sons and daughters of a few nations,” declared the chief minister of the province.
She continued, “The uniform is an honor as well as a great test.”
After being spotted last month reviewing a passing-out parade of female constables and traffic aides at the Police Training College, Chung, while wearing khaki Punjab Police clothing and wielding the police baton, CM Maryam put on the immaculate charcoal black uniform a few weeks later.
CM Maryam received backlash after donning the khaki outfit, with some questioning her legitimacy to wear the official uniform. This created a polarizing debate on social media.
The provincial police department clarified in a statement released in the wake of the incident that she is, in fact, “entitled to wear the police uniform” in accordance with the Punjab Police Dress Regulations.
In keeping with tradition, the chief minister was once again smartly attired in the uniform of the Elite Force.
