Nigel Farage has rejected claims that he failed to declare benefits received from a close political ally, insisting that he acted within parliamentary rules. The Reform UK leader described the allegations as an attempt to damage both his reputation and his party.
The controversy began after reports claimed Farage received several non cash benefits from George Cottrell during the year before he became the MP for Clacton. Those reported benefits included security support, social media staff who helped create online content, and access to a property near Buckingham Palace.
Farage strongly denied any wrongdoing and said he is considering legal action over the claims. He maintained that he followed all the required rules and accused political opponents of trying to undermine Reform UK’s growing support.
Allegations Focus on Pre Election Benefits
According to the reports, George Cottrell provided assistance that may have qualified as registrable benefits under parliamentary rules. New MPs must declare financial interests and certain benefits received during the 12 months before entering Parliament.
However, Farage’s team argued that the reported support was personal rather than political. They also said the assistance did not require registration under parliamentary guidelines.
The rules state that purely personal gifts or benefits do not have to be declared. Farage believes the reported support falls into that category.
Liberal Democrat MP Calls for Investigation
The issue has now attracted political attention. Liberal Democrat MP Josh Babarinde has asked the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner to examine the matter.
Babarinde said Farage should provide a clear explanation about the reported benefits. He argued that public confidence depends on politicians being open about financial support and outside assistance.
The request adds further pressure on Farage, who is already facing scrutiny over another financial matter.
Farage Faces Separate Inquiry
Farage is also under investigation over a reported £5 million gift from a wealthy Reform UK supporter. Critics questioned why the donation was not registered.
Farage has defended his position by saying he received the gift before becoming an MP and that it was not connected to his parliamentary role. His representatives have used the same argument in response to the latest allegations involving Cottrell.
Who Is George Cottrell?
George Cottrell has been associated with Farage for several years. He worked as a volunteer during the Brexit campaign and remained one of Farage’s close political allies.
In 2017, Cottrell admitted a wire fraud offence in the United States. More recently, he has been linked to cryptocurrency businesses.
His legal representatives rejected the latest allegations and said he strongly disputes the claims made against him.
Farage Insists He Followed the Rules
Farage continues to deny any breach of parliamentary standards. He says he complied with all relevant rules and believes the allegations are politically motivated.
While calls for an investigation continue, the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner will decide whether any further action is necessary. Until then, Farage maintains that he has done nothing wrong and remains confident that the facts will support his position.
