PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, led by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, requested that a judicial commission be established to investigate the May 9 riots of last year, which were sparked by the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in connection with a graft case. However, the Peshawar High Court (PHC) denied their motion.
The PHC’s registrar responded to the KP government’s letter requesting the creation of a judicial commission by stating that Advocate General Shah Faisal Uthmankhel’s request could not be taken into consideration due to a violation of the 1985 Rules of Business.
This development follows a letter sent by the provincial government to PHC Chief Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim last month requesting a probe into the occurrences on May 9 that resulted in vandalism of military institutions, including the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi and the Lahore Corps Commander’s House.
