President Arif Alvi receives a guard of honor before leaving

A smartly turned-out contingent of armed forces presented a guard of honour to President Arif Alvi

coISLAMABAD: President Dr. Arif Alvi was given a farewell guard of honour on Friday, marking the end of his term as the 13th head of state, while Pakista People’s Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari is expected to become the new president with the support of the allied parties in tomorrow’s election.

Alvi was inaugurated as president on September 9, 2018, and his tenure ended last year, but he continued to serve because the electoral college was not present for the president’s election.

Today, a well-dressed military group gave a guard of respect to the leaving president.

The national anthem was performed when the president stood on the saluting dais.He later shook hands with the officials and staff of the Aiwan-e-Sadr.

The final guard of honour was given one day before the next presidential election, which is planned for Saturday.

The ruling alliance has projected that its nominee, Asif Ali Zardari, will receive more than 400 electoral votes in the presidential elections, which are slated for Saturday (March 9).

The ruling alliance has pitted former president and Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPP-P) President Zardari against Pakhtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) Chairman Mahmood Khan Achakzai, who is supported by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), for the presidency.

Members of the Senate and National Assembly will exercise their right to vote by secret ballot in the Parliament House, while polling for the presidential elections will also be held in the four provincial assemblies.

As many as 325 members of the National Assembly, 91 senators, 354 members of the Punjab Assembly, 157 members of the Sindh Assembly, 117 members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, and 65 members of the Balochistan Assembly would cast their vote.
