The energy company has disclosed that the newly appointed CEO of Shell was compensated with about £8 million during his first year on the job.
Shell softened one of its carbon reduction targets, revealing more information about the compensation.
Wael Sawan received incentives of £7.94 million, which was less than the £9.7 million that Ben van Beurden, his predecessor, received in 2022.
Pressure groups criticized the amount of the salary package.
The amount is “a bitter pill to swallow for the millions of workers living with the high costs of energy,” according to Jonathan Noronha-Gant, senior fossil fuels campaigner at Global Witness.
Additionally, Shell declared that by 2030, it would cut the “net carbon intensity” of the energy it sells by 15-20%.
Shell’s CEO received an £8 million salary in the first year.
