Himanta Biswa Sarma Begins Second Term as Assam Chief Minister Election Victory in Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma has been sworn in again as chief minister of Assam after a strong win for the ruling party. Political Journey and Rise Sarma represents the Jalukbari constituency near Guwahati, Assam’s largest city. He has held this seat since 2001. His move brought several supporters with him and weakened the Congress party in Assam. His shift also helped the BJP expand quickly in the region. Role in BJP Expansion in Northeast India Sarma played a major role in building the BJP’s presence across northeast India. The party once had limited support in Assam, with a low vote share for many years. Over time, its support grew significantly and now stands much higher than before. Governance and Welfare Programs During his leadership, the state government focused on infrastructure development such as roads and bridges. One of the key welfare schemes is Orunodoi, which provides financial support to women from low income families. Supporters say this program has helped many households across Assam. His administration has also focused on public services and development projects. Criticism and Political Debate Sarma’s leadership has also faced criticism. Opposition parties and rights groups accuse the government of targeting minority communities, especially Bengali speaking Muslims. Issues such as migration, identity, and citizenship remain sensitive in Assam politics. Some policies linked to religious schools and child marriage have sparked public debate. A recent AI generated video shared by the state party unit also triggered controversy before being removed.

Several Labour MPs and ministers are now openly questioning his leadership after the party suffered major losses in recent elections across the UK. The political situation intensified after three government ministers resigned from their posts. Among them was Jess Phillips, whose departure added fresh pressure on Starmer’s government. Other resignations from ministerial aides have also increased concerns about unity within the party. Cabinet Divisions Continue to Grow During a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Starmer made it clear that he does not plan to step down as Labour leader or prime minister. He reportedly challenged critics inside the party to formally launch a leadership contest if they want to replace him. Despite criticism from many MPs, some senior ministers still publicly support Starmer. Housing Secretary Steve Reed and Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden both confirmed they continue to back his leadership. However, political observers noticed that Health Secretary Wes Streeting avoided commenting on the crisis as he left Downing Street. Many Labour members view him as a possible future leadership contender. At the same time, Foreign Office Minister Jenny Chapman admitted discussions about Starmer’s future are taking place inside government circles. Still, she said no cabinet minister directly challenged him during the meeting. More Than 80 MPs Call for Starmer to Quit The rebellion inside Labour has continued to grow. Reports suggest more than 80 Labour MPs have either demanded Starmer’s resignation or urged him to announce a timeline for leaving office. Senior figures, including Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, are also said to be encouraging the prime minister to consider an exit plan. Meanwhile, another group of more than 100 Labour MPs signed a statement asking colleagues to avoid a damaging leadership battle. They urged party members to remain focused on governing instead of creating more instability. Election Defeats Triggered the Crisis The current crisis began after Labour suffered heavy losses in local and regional elections last week. The party reportedly lost nearly 1,500 council seats across England. Labour also lost power in Wales and recorded its worst-ever performance in the Scottish Parliament elections. Those disappointing results raised serious concerns about Starmer’s popularity and leadership strategy ahead of future national elections. Political tensions also increased after criticism surrounding Starmer’s decision to appoint Peter Mandelson as the UK ambassador to the United States. Some Labour MPs questioned whether the move reflected poor political judgment. Possible Successors Already Being Discussed As pressure continues to rise, several names are being discussed as possible replacements for Starmer if a leadership contest begins. Alongside Wes Streeting, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner is considered one of the strongest potential challengers within the Labour Party. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham also has support among some Labour members. However, he would first need to become an MP before officially entering a leadership race. For now, Starmer remains in office, but growing resignations, internal divisions, and election setbacks continue to place his leadership under intense pressure.

Body Found Believed to Be Fugitive Australian Shooter in New South Wales Discovery Near Rural Area in New South Wales Police in New South Wales say a body has been found that is believed to be Julian Ingram, a man wanted for a deadly shooting incident earlier this year. The remains were located about 50 kilometers from the scene of the original crime near a remote area north west of the town linked to the case. Wildlife officers found the body beside an abandoned utility vehicle while carrying out pest control work. Authorities later confirmed that the vehicle matched the one used by Ingram during his escape. Connection to January Shooting Incident In January, Ingram was accused of killing three people in a small rural town. The victims included his former partner Sophie Quinn, her close friend, and her aunt. Quinn was seven months pregnant at the time of her death and was expecting a baby in March. Another victim survived the attack but suffered serious injuries. Police later confirmed that the injured person has since been discharged from hospital. Large Scale Police Search Operation After the killings, police launched a major search operation involving around 100 officers. Authorities described Ingram as someone with strong local knowledge, which made the search more difficult. Officials believed he could remain hidden in the region for a long period without being detected. The area where the incident occurred is sparsely populated, with only around 1,500 residents. Police Statement on the Discovery Assistant Commissioner Andrew Holland said early findings suggest the body is likely that of Ingram. He noted that clothing and identification found at the scene support this conclusion. Police also confirmed that the remains appear to have been at the location for an extended period before discovery. Holland added that the finding brings relief to the investigation and may help the local community move forward after the violent events. Investigation Status Authorities are continuing formal identification procedures. However, police say early evidence strongly suggests the search for the suspect has ended with the discovery of his body.
