Meta confirms major shift in WhatsApp leadership
WhatsApp head Will Cathcart has stepped down from his leadership role after nearly seven years. During his tenure, he helped WhatsApp grow into one of the world’s largest messaging platforms, now serving over three billion users. He said the platform is in its strongest position so far and that the timing felt right to move on.
Cathcart will still remain within Meta’s leadership structure, so he will continue contributing in a broader role rather than fully leaving the company.
Kunal Shah appointed as new WhatsApp head
Meta has named Kunal Shah, founder of Indian fintech company Cred, as the new head of WhatsApp. The appointment highlights Meta’s growing focus on India, which is one of WhatsApp’s biggest user markets.
Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg praised Shah’s work, saying he built one of India’s most important technology companies. He added that Shah brings strong product thinking and a global outlook that fits WhatsApp’s scale and ambition.
About Kunal Shah and Cred
Kunal Shah founded Cred in 2018 in Bengaluru. The platform focuses on credit card payments and rewards users with high credit scores for timely bill payments. It positions itself as a members only financial service.
Before Cred, Shah worked as an investor and advisor for several startups across India and Southeast Asia.
He confirmed that he will continue holding his stake in Cred while taking on his new role at WhatsApp.
Meta’s investment and strategy shift
Cred has raised around 900 million dollars in funding from Meta. Reports suggest this may give Meta close to a 20 percent stake in the company, although it remains a minority investor.
Shah also stated that Meta will not have access to user member data through its investment.
Meta has been pushing WhatsApp toward stronger monetization. The company is exploring revenue streams such as business tools, ads, subscriptions, and AI based features.
WhatsApp’s role in India
India is WhatsApp’s largest market, with an estimated 853 million users. The platform plays a key role in communication and business messaging across the country.
Meta is now aiming to expand WhatsApp’s commercial ecosystem in India while keeping its core messaging service free for users.
