Australia’s biggest telecommunications provider, Telstra, faced a major service outage that affected mobile calls and data services across the country on Wednesday.
The problem started at around 4:30 am local time and continued for almost 12 hours. Thousands of customers reported problems with mobile connectivity during the disruption.
Telstra Chief Financial Officer Michael Ackland apologised to customers and confirmed that the outage affected some mobile voice and internet services.
Software Problem Behind Telstra Network Failure
Telstra said a software defect linked to time keeping servers caused the network issue. The affected systems were located in data centres in Sydney and Melbourne.
The company confirmed that the outage was not caused by a cyber attack. Technical teams worked to restore services, and normal operations returned after several hours.
Although Telstra described the problem as intermittent, the impact reached customers across Australia.
Emergency Services Face Communication Problems
The outage created concerns about emergency communication services. Some customers experienced difficulties while trying to contact emergency responders during the network failure.
Telstra said it contacted customers who attempted emergency calls during the outage. Six people were identified as needing urgent assistance after welfare checks.
The company added that backup systems, which transfer emergency calls through other mobile networks, worked successfully in most situations.
Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the outage a serious issue and said reliable communication networks are essential for public safety.
Trains and Businesses Affected by Service Failure
The Telstra outage also affected transport and payment services.
In Victoria, regional train services were cancelled because of communication problems. Some regional train operations in New South Wales also faced delays.
National freight services experienced disruptions as well.
Meanwhile, thousands of businesses faced payment problems. Around 80,000 businesses using the Tyro Payments platform experienced issues during the outage.
Government Orders Investigation Into Outage
Communications Minister Anika Wells announced that the Australian Communications and Media Authority will investigate the cause of the failure.
Telstra said it invests heavily in network security, backup systems and reliability. The company also stated that large telecommunications networks are complex and technical failures can happen.
Ackland said customers can continue to trust Telstra’s network and promised that the company takes service disruptions seriously.
Telco Reliability Under Review After Previous Failures
The latest Telstra outage has increased concerns about Australia’s telecommunications reliability.
A previous outage at Optus affected emergency call services and caused widespread criticism. The incident led to further discussions about improving backup systems for critical communication networks.
The Telstra disruption has renewed attention on the importance of stronger infrastructure and reliable emergency communication systems across Australia.
