The ‘called shot’ jersey owned by Babe Ruth fetches a record price at auction.

The most expensive sports memorabilia ever sold at auction was the jersey Babe Ruth wore when he "called the shot" in the 1932 World Series before hitting a home run. It brought in over £24.1 million (£18.1 million).

The jersey broke the previous record set by fellow Yankee Mickey Mantle’s 1952 rookie card, which the Dallas-based auction house sold for $12.6 million (£9.5 million) in 2022. The shirt was sold at Heritage Auctions.
It was because of the shirt Ruth was wearing when his Yankees and the Chicago Cubs squared off in Game 3 of the World Series at Chicago’s Wrigley Field—one of the most iconic moments in sports history.

Before hitting a home run and leading the Yankees to victory in the World Series, the sports legend seemed to call his shot.

Even after almost a century has passed, this landmark moment in history remains shrouded in mystery.

Whether Ruth truly called the shot has never been a settled question. Some claim the video shows him pointing at the pitcher, while others claim he’s pointing toward center field or the club bench. He went on to say that Ruth, who was known for her prophecies, had very obviously “said something’s going to happen on the next pitch, and he made it happen.” He added that Ruth had acknowledged calling the shot prior to his 1948 passing.
