According to Mike Slater, the PE teacher at South Dartmoor Community College in Ashburton, Devon, Watkins’ last-minute goal in the Euro 2024 semifinal was “hugely inspiring” for the students at his former school.
It was unbelievable to us. Ollie’s 90th-minute goal was simply amazing, he added. “I had the WhatsApp group of former teachers here, and they were saying, ‘get Ollie on, get Ollie on’ for the winner,” he added.
The PE teacher said, “We’re glad to accept any reflected glory, but we’re also incredibly proud of the person who has passed through our school.
It’s already unusual for them to be selected for an England team; therefore, it’s really amazing that they scored the winning goal in the 90th minute of a European Championship semifinal.
During the first few lessons, he kind of gave me the runaround. Although he had a mischievous side, it was evident that he was an exceptionally talented athlete.
