The well-known video-sharing website is attempting to stop the recently passed legislation, claiming that it goes against the US constitution, particularly the First Amendment’s protection of free speech.
President Joe Biden signed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act on April 24. ByteDance, the Chinese parent firm of TikTok, has until January 19 of next year to sell the app to a different business or risk being banned.
Congress overwhelmingly approved the bill last month in response to US lawmakers’ concerns that China may use the app to eavesdrop on or obtain personal information about Americans.
TikTok claims that US lawmakers are promoting “speculative” worries and disputes that it has ever shared or will disclose user data from US citizens.
