Using its new regulatory powers to address Big Tech’s dominance, Britain certified Google as having strategic market status in internet search on Friday, opening the door for ‘proportionate, targeted’ measures.
According to the regulator, the Competition and Markets Authority’s action, which gives it the authority to force the US corporation to alter its operations, does not constitute a finding of misconduct and does not impose any new obligations right away.
“With over 90% of searches in the UK occurring on its platform, we have discovered that Google maintains a strategic position in the search and search advertising sector,” stated Will Hayter, Executive Director for Digital Markets at the CMA.
