ISLAMABAD: “Content uploaded on the internet” poses a “threat” to the nation’s security, the Ministry of Interior informed the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday.
During a hearing on journalist Ehtesham Abbasi’s petition against the closure of X, formerly known as Twitter, the joint secretary of the Interior Ministry made these remarks.
Since its suspension on February 17, millions of users in Pakistan have not been able to access X, a valuable source of information, for almost a month.
The joint secretary of the Interior Ministry made an appearance before IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq at today’s session to hear the plea and turned in a report to the court.
The court inquired as to whether formal correspondence existed regarding X’s closure.
“What is this technique? What mindset is this? The IHC CJ stated, “Help the court. Everything is closed and jammed.”
The joint secretary was instructed by the court to provide written notice of the threat to national security rather than relying solely on his oral declarations.
Present the documents to us. There shall be no spoken exchanges,” declared Justice Farooq.
The CJ stated that this report was not as good as what his secretary would produce. IHC CJ Farooq was instructed to turn to the other page by the joint secretary at this point.
