Former Disney CEO Bob Iger and Josh Kushner, the brother of US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared, are purchasing the majority stake in one of the most recognizable sports clubs in the world. LA Lakers Set for Record $12.5bn Sale to Kushner and Iger In a deal that was unanimously authorized by the NBA Board of Governors in October 2025. Walter purchased his stake from the Buss family for an estimated $10 billion (£7.45 billion), setting a previous record. Kushner and Iger said: “As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world. “We greatly admire the vision and leadership of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. How Mark Walter Became Lakers Owner “Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles.” In 1979, Jerry Buss purchased the Lakers for $67.5 million (£50 million), which also included the Los Angeles Kings hockey franchise and the Kia Forum, a Los Angeles arena. Before a contract was finalized with Walter, who also holds a part in the LA Dodgers alongside Todd Boehly, ownership was transferred to his six children in a trust upon his death in 2013. Lakers Have 17 NBA Championships “One of the greatest honors of my life has been owning the Los Angeles Lakers,” Walter remarked. The community, the supporters, and a city that views this team as family are what I will take with me, even if it has been an incredible investment. I appreciate being welcomed into this chapter by Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff. Los Angeles owns the Lakers, and I’m confident that the greatest is still to come.” The LA Lakers have won 17 NBA titles, one fewer than the Boston Celtics’ record of 18. Kushner’s involvement in the recent scandal regarding Fifa head Gianni Infantino and an abandoned plan before the sale. How the Buss Family Owned the Lakers I am appreciative to Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff for allowing me to be a part of this chapter. Kushner’s involvement in the recent scandal surrounding Fifa head Gianni Infantino and an abandoned attempt to sell private investors shares in the governing body’s competitions before the agreement. It was anticipated that the planned investor group for the Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) initiative would be led by Kushner’s American venture capital firm, Thrive Eternal. US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

She met Brian Hickerson, her new lover, just before Nashville's production concluded. Later on, he became aggressive; according to Panettiere, he would smack her head against the wall and once battered her face so severely that she was unable to leave her home for weeks. In her 36 years, she faced more challenges than most, and she tried to deal with them by writing her book, which was released in May. She concluded by assuring readers that she had learned to "walk hand in hand with my triumphs and my tragedies, because they have made me who I am" and that she had come to terms with her past while maintaining optimism for the future.

Explore how the United States transformed from 13 colonies into a global power over 250 years, and how its early political and cultural divisions continue to influence modern America.

The United States has changed dramatically since declaring independence from Great Britain in 1776. What began as a small group of 13 colonies along the Atlantic coast has become one of the world’s most influential nations. Over the past 250 years, the country has expanded its territory, grown its population, and built a global presence. At the same time, many of the political and cultural differences that shaped the nation’s early years continue to influence American society today.

From 13 Colonies to a Global Power

When the United States declared independence, it covered about 430,000 square miles. Today, the country spans nearly 3.7 million square miles, making it more than eight times larger than it was at its founding.

Population growth has followed a similar path. The first national census in 1790 recorded around four million people, including enslaved individuals. By 2025, the population had reached approximately 343 million. This remarkable increase reflects more than two centuries of immigration, economic growth, and territorial expansion.

A Nation Built Through Challenge and Change

America’s founders dreamed of creating a strong and independent nation, but success was never guaranteed. The young country faced deep disagreements over slavery, the Constitution, the economy, and the balance of political power. These issues created divisions that tested the nation’s unity from the very beginning.

One major turning point came in 1803 with the Louisiana Purchase from France. This historic agreement nearly doubled the size of the United States and opened new opportunities for westward expansion. Even so, the nation’s future remained uncertain. During the War of 1812, many observers believed the country could still fall apart.

Regional Differences Shaped Early America

Historians believe that different settlement patterns helped create lasting political and cultural identities across the United States.

The northern region, often called Yankeeland, was largely settled by Puritans seeking religious freedom. Later arrivals from Germany and Scandinavia strengthened values that emphasized education, community, and shared responsibility.

The central Appalachian region attracted many Scottish and Irish settlers. Their experiences under British rule encouraged a strong belief in personal freedom and limited government. Many people in this region viewed government expansion with caution and preferred greater individual independence.

The Deep South developed differently. Wealthy landowners, including some who moved from Caribbean plantations, created a society built around large agricultural estates and concentrated political power. This structure played a major role in shaping the region’s economic and political identity.

Early Divisions Still Influence Modern Politics

Although the United States has transformed over the past 250 years, many of its original political debates remain relevant. Questions about immigration, federal authority, national identity, and America’s role in the world continue to dominate public discussion.

Many analysts believe these long standing regional differences help explain why political opinions often vary across the country. Modern debates may look different from those of the eighteenth century, but many reflect the same values and disagreements that shaped America’s earliest years.

The decision affects about 2.1% of its global employees. Xbox will experience one of the biggest impacts, with thousands of positions being removed as part of a large restructuring plan. Company leaders say the move will help Microsoft adjust to changing customer needs and prepare for future growth in a rapidly evolving technology industry. More Than 3,200 Xbox Jobs to Be Eliminated Xbox will immediately eliminate more than 1,600 jobs. The company also plans to remove another 1,600 positions over the next year. According to Xbox Chief Executive Asha Sharma, this marks the biggest restructuring in the gaming division's history. She explained that the changes are designed to build a stronger and more competitive Xbox rather than reduce its long term ambitions. Sharma said successful companies must continue adapting instead of assuming their past achievements will guarantee future success. Four Xbox Studios to Become Independent As part of the restructuring, Microsoft will separate four game development studios from Xbox. The studios include: Compulsion Games Double Fine Productions Ninja Theory Undead Labs The company believes this change will allow Xbox to focus on its future priorities while giving these studios greater flexibility. Microsoft Focuses on Future Growth Microsoft Executive Vice President Amy Coleman told employees that the technology industry is changing quickly. She said businesses must adapt if they want to continue serving customers successfully. Coleman also addressed questions about artificial intelligence. She explained that AI is changing how work gets done across the company. However, she clarified that AI is not directly replacing the jobs affected by these layoffs. Microsoft says its goal is to simplify operations and invest in areas that offer the greatest value for customers and long term growth. Gaming Industry Continues to Face Challenges The gaming industry has experienced widespread job losses over the past few years. Many developers have reduced staff as companies adjust to rising development costs and changing market conditions. Last year, Xbox cut more than 2,000 jobs and closed four studios after completing its acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Earlier this year, Microsoft also announced plans to reduce up to 9,000 additional positions while continuing to invest billions of dollars in artificial intelligence infrastructure and technology. What This Means for Xbox The latest restructuring signals another major shift for Xbox as Microsoft reshapes its gaming business. Although thousands of jobs are being eliminated, company executives insist these changes are intended to strengthen Xbox's future and improve its ability to compete in the global gaming market. Industry experts will closely watch how the restructuring affects upcoming games, studio operations, and Microsoft's long term gaming strategy.
