LAHORE: According to study, the relatively new idea of court martial has its origins in British military traditions, despite the fact that military law has roots in ancient Roman and Greek civilizations, where it was implemented to maintain discipline among the ranks.
It was known as the “Court of the Marshal” in the United Kingdom starting in 1521, according to the British National Archives and a look into the history of the nation’s judiciary.
To oversee the court martials, the position of Judge Advocate General was established in 1666.
In the past, the British Judge Advocate General had a broad range of duties, including managing the court and the arrangements for both prosecution and defense.
