Ceasefire warning from Iran
Iran has issued a strong warning that Israeli military action in Lebanon could put a wider ceasefire understanding with the United States at risk.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the agreement with the United States covers all fronts, including Lebanon. He stated that any breach in one area would undermine the entire arrangement.
Israeli strikes and Hezbollah response
The Israeli leadership said it ordered strikes on the Dahieh area in southern Beirut. Israel described the targets as linked to militant activity following rocket and drone attacks on civilians.
The situation escalated after continued exchanges with Hezbollah, despite an earlier ceasefire attempt announced in April that has struggled to hold.
Possible suspension of talks with the United States
Iranian media reports suggested Tehran may pause indirect talks with the United States if the situation worsens.
Reports also indicated that Iran and its allies could expand pressure through regional routes, including maritime chokepoints like the Bab al Mandab Strait.
Iran has not officially confirmed these claims, but state media has warned that the ceasefire outlook with the United States is fragile.
Wider regional risks and global shipping concerns
The United States has tried to keep negotiations with Iran separate from fighting in Lebanon. Washington has also pushed for gradual de escalation in the region.
At the same time, tensions have spread to the Strait of Hormuz. Recent strikes between the United States and Iran have raised fears of broader conflict.
Energy markets reacted quickly. Oil prices rose as traders reacted to instability. Around one fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas flows pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
Political signals from Washington
US President Donald Trump has suggested that progress is being made toward a possible long term agreement with Tehran, though no final deal has been confirmed.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also pushed proposals for gradual de escalation involving regional leaders.
