A child’s concern for his chicken
In rural Ethiopia, a 12 year old boy named Markos Abaye showed deep care for animals. When his pet chicken became seriously ill, he tried home remedies first. When nothing worked, he decided to seek medical help.
Instead of finding a veterinary clinic, Markos took the chicken straight to Denbecha Primary Hospital in the Amhara region.
Hospital visit surprises staff
At the hospital, nurse Umer Chane noticed the boy holding the weak chicken. Markos explained that the bird was struggling to breathe.
The nurse gently told him that the hospital treats humans, not animals. He advised Markos to take the chicken to a veterinary clinic instead.
A short video recorded at the hospital captured the moment and quickly spread online, gaining hundreds of thousands of views. Many people praised the boy’s kindness and emotional bond with the animal.
From hospital to veterinary care
After the visit, Markos followed advice and took the chicken to a local vet in Denbecha. The bird received treatment and began to recover.
His uncle and guardian, Kelemework Amogne, said the boy was deeply worried during the illness. He even stopped studying and eating because of stress over the chicken.
Social media reaction
The video gained massive attention, with people reacting to Markos’ compassion. His story highlighted how strong emotional bonds between children and animals can be, even in rural communities where access to veterinary knowledge may be limited.
Markos later shared that his chicken was improving. He also said he planned to let the bird hatch the eggs he had saved.
