Terrorists Target Police Guarding
Pakistan’s Balochistan province witnessed another deadly terrorist attack when armed militants targeted police officers assigned to protect the Mangi Dam construction site in Ziarat district. The assault claimed the lives of at least nine police officers, while several others remain missing.
Local officials confirmed that the attackers suddenly opened fire on the security team responsible for protecting the multi billion rupee dam project. The unexpected attack caused heavy casualties among the police personnel stationed at the site.
Senior Police Officers Among the Victims
According to district authorities, two senior police officers lost their lives during the attack. Rescue teams and security personnel immediately reached the area after the incident. Authorities also launched a search operation to locate the missing officers and secure the surrounding region.
Officials continue to gather information about the missing personnel as security forces maintain a strong presence in the district.
Security Forces Launch Clearance Operation
Soon after the attack, Pakistani security forces began a large scale clearance operation in and around Ziarat district. Officials stated that security personnel killed 15 members of the Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) during the operation.
Although no militant organization has officially claimed responsibility for the assault, authorities continue to investigate those involved and strengthen security across the area.
Protests Erupt After Deadly Attack
The tragic incident sparked protests near the national highway close to the attack site. Citizens gathered to express grief over the loss of police officers and demanded stronger security measures to prevent similar attacks in the future.
Many protesters also called for swift action against the militants responsible for targeting security personnel.
Mangi Dam Holds Major Importance
The police officers were protecting the construction of the Mangi Dam, an important development project designed to address the growing water shortage in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan.
Authorities consider the project vital because it aims to improve water availability for thousands of residents living in and around the provincial capital.
Security Challenges Continue in Balochistan
Balochistan has faced security challenges for many years due to the presence of militant and separatist groups. The province shares borders with both Afghanistan and Iran, making it strategically important as well as vulnerable to armed violence.
In recent months, security forces have carried out several operations against militant groups operating in the region. Earlier this year, a separatist attack on a train carrying military personnel also resulted in significant loss of life, highlighting the ongoing security concerns across the province.
Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi strongly condemned the latest terrorist attack and paid tribute to the fallen police officers. He described them as brave individuals who sacrificed their lives while protecting a project of national importance and serving the country with dedication.
