Australia faced a major telecommunications disruption after an outage at Telstra affected mobile services, emergency calls, train operations, and payment systems across the country.
The outage started around 04:30 local time on Wednesday and continued for nearly 12 hours. Thousands of customers reported problems with mobile calls and data services before Telstra restored its network.
Software Issue Behind Nationwide Disruption
Telstra Chief Financial Officer Michael Ackland said a software defect in time keeping servers at data centres in Sydney and Melbourne caused the problem. He confirmed that the outage was not linked to a cyber attack.
The company described the disruption as intermittent but admitted that the impact reached customers nationwide.
Ackland apologised for the disruption and said Telstra carried out welfare checks on people who tried to contact emergency services during the outage. Six customers required immediate assistance after their emergency calls failed to connect.
Emergency Services and Transport Operations Affected
The outage caused major problems for transport services. In Victoria, all regional train services stopped because of communication issues. Some regional services in New South Wales also faced delays.
National freight operations also experienced disruptions during the network failure.
Backup systems designed to redirect emergency calls through other mobile networks worked in most cases, according to Telstra. However, the incident raised concerns about the reliability of critical communication services.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the outage as deeply concerning and called for answers about the impact on Australians.
Government Launches Investigation
Communications Minister Anika Wells confirmed that the Australian Communications and Media Authority will investigate the incident.
The investigation will examine what caused the failure and whether Telstra’s systems were prepared to handle such a large disruption.
Telstra said it invests heavily in network security, backup systems, and reliability. However, Ackland admitted that large telecommunications networks can still experience technical failures.
Businesses Face Payment Problems
The outage also affected businesses across Australia. Around 80,000 businesses using the Tyro payment platform experienced problems during the disruption.
The incident has increased concerns about the country’s dependence on major telecommunications networks for daily services, transport, payments, and emergency communication.
Previous Telecom Outages Raised Safety Concerns
The Telstra outage follows previous problems in Australia’s telecommunications sector. In September, an outage at Optus affected emergency calls for thousands of people across the country.
The Optus incident led to serious concerns after several deaths were linked to failures in accessing emergency services. The company was later fined after another outage affected emergency call access in 2023.
The latest Telstra disruption has renewed calls for stronger backup systems and improved protection for essential communication networks.
