Charity Cyclist Dies After Ride
A day after finishing the challenge, an 82-year-old cyclist who rode 3,300 miles (5,300 km) across Australia to raise money for charity passed away.
A day after Bob Montgomery completed what he had called “One Last Ride” from Broome in Western Australia to Bowral.
Southwest of Sydney, his family posted a message on social media stating that his death was “unexpected” but “peaceful”.
With the six-week trip, he and his 18-year-old grandson had earned over A$105,000 ($74,000.
He had raised about A$300,000 on his prior rides and was motivated to take on the challenge after losing a cousin to MND. “I have witnessed friends and family members suffer. On his fundraiser site, he added, “It’s heartbreaking.”
On Monday, Malcolm proceeded on to Sydney, where the family had reconvened to rejoice once again.
However, Montgomery experienced a medical incident soon after the celebration, according to MND NSW CEO Liam O’Meara.
O’Meara described Montgomery as a “cherished friend and tireless supporter of MND NSW” and said he was “deeply saddened” by his passing.
