LIMASSOL, Cyprus: Under a 1570 oil painting by Renaissance master Titian, a rendering of which is currently on exhibit in the city of Limassol, researchers in Cyprus have uncovered a hidden portrait that had been hidden for centuries.
In contrast to the scene of Jesus Christ, bound and wearing a crown of thorns, which Titian later painted over it, the recently found piece depicts an unidentified guy with a thin mustache, pen in hand, standing next to a stack of papers or books.
According to Professor Nikolas Bakirtzis, who heads a team at the Cyprus Institute (CyI), a non-profit educational organization, the artwork “holds a secret, and the secret is that there is, unknown until now, a painting underneath,”
