Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva made history on Sunday by becoming the first president of Brazil and all of Latin America to win a fourth term. He accomplished this just days before turning 81, an age at which many other presidents choose to retire from politics.

Another record was also made by the Brazilian president’s incredible comeback against Flňio Bolsonaro, his right-wing opponent. No president of Brazil has been able to reverse a first-round setback since the country’s restoration to democracy in 1985. In the three weeks between the two voting rounds, the Workers’ Party candidate received almost 10 million additional votes.

Lula Wins as Bolsonaro Challenges Election

Lula’s victory over Jair Bolsonaro, Flávio’s father and the president at the time, in 2022 was made possible by the decisive margin.

As the right gains ground in other Latin American nations, many of whose governments now support Donald Trump’s White House, Lula’s resurgence also enables her to maintain her position as the leading figure of the regional left.

On October 25, 2026, early results of the presidential runoff election are announced, and a supporter of Liberal Party (PL) candidate Flavio Bolsonaro of Brazil dons a Brazilian flag.

Lula’s Historic Win, Limited Governing Power

Flávio Bolsonaro, as his father did four years prior, declared he would utilize the legal system to have the election declared void and refused to acknowledge the outcome.

The senator contested Supreme Federal Court Justice Cristiano Zanin’s order to prolong voting by two hours, claiming that equal voting circumstances had been compromised by the measure’s unequal implementation. “Given the circumstances in which these events unfolded, it is impossible to recognize the election results,” he said.

Bolsonaro’s remarks did not lessen the joy around Lula’s momentous accomplishment. However, the political might of the right may make it more difficult for his new administration to run smoothly.

What explains Lula’s unexpected victory?

How Lula overcame his first-round deficit can be explained by geography. He moved from losing by about 590,000 votes to winning by around 99,000 in Minas Gerais, the state with the second-largest electorate in Brazil.

This represents a swing of almost 690,000 votes between the two candidates. The state voted in accordance with the national outcome once more. Since 1989, the state has supported the victor of every direct presidential election.

The two biggest cities in Brazil, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, were won by Lula, who also overturned the first-round outcome in Rio, even though Flňio maintained his advantage in both states.

More than one challenge ahead

Last-minute policies and initiatives targeted at voters’ specific concerns accompanied the drive. Lula offered additional measures to restructure consumer debt, signed legislation increasing the revenue requirement for individual microentrepreneurs, and pushed for the abolition of internet betting, whose growth has increased family debt.

For really egregious crimes, he supported decreasing the age of criminal responsibility. The action was meant to address calls for a more aggressive approach to crime, which was another significant election-related concern.

Lula is able to maintain his position of authority thanks to the triumph, but he must live up to the standards he set in order to do so.

Lula Faces Conservative Congress and Coalition Challenges

After celebrating his win, Lula’s first task will be legislative. In the Chamber of Deputies, right-wing parties will control 303 of the 513 seats, while the left will command 124 and the center will hold 86.

The right will hold about two-thirds of the Senate’s seats. That does not automatically make all of those lawmakers adversaries.

“We have no opponents after we win the election. In his victory address, Lula declared, “I have to govern for 215 million people.”

Lula Faces Economic Pressures and Fiscal Constraints

Converting economic advances into alleviation that Brazilians can experience on a daily basis will be the most pressing problem. One of the primary factors undermining Lula’s popularity during the campaign was perceptions about the economy. Improvements in employment do not always alleviate the burden of debt and household spending, and lower inflation does not return prices to their prior levels.

Financial limitations will make it more difficult to address such dissatisfaction. The government’s capacity to raise expenditure is constrained by debt, the deficit, and high interest rates, which all hint to disagreements over how to finance campaign pledges without endangering social programs.
