UNITED NATIONS: Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, has urged that the threat presented by terrorist safe havens in neighboring Afghanistan be addressed and action taken.
“We must sincerely address the terrorist threats from Afghanistan,” Ambassador Akram stated during a UNSC debate on the 20th biannual report of the secretary-general on the threat posed by Daesh to international peace and security. “This threat of Daesh, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and Majeed Brigade is a threat not only to Afghanistan and Pakistan but to the entire region and beyond [….]”
Since the Afghan Taliban returned to Kabul in Afghanistan, there has been a surge in terrorist strikes in Pakistan, which is the context for the envoy’s comments.
