According to the Vatican, Pope Francis is receiving treatment for a “complex clinical situation” and will stay in the hospital for as long as is required.
On Friday, the 88-year-old was brought to Gemelli Hospital in Rome for bronchitis treatment and testing.
The Vatican announced on Monday that the pope’s therapy has to be modified due to a “polymicrobial infection” of his respiratory tract.
The Pope did not have a fever and was “proceeding with the prescribed treatment” in a stable state, according to a later update. While in the hospital on Monday, he also did some reading and work.
“Pope Francis is touched by the numerous messages of affection and closeness that he has been receiving in recent hours,” said a statement.
