In northeastern Pakistan, a couple has been arrested on suspicion of killing a 13-year-old maid who allegedly stole chocolates from them.

Last Wednesday, the girl who only goes by Iqra passed away in the hospital from several wounds. She had been tortured, according to the results of an initial police inquiry.

The Rawalpindi case has rekindled the debate about underage labor and the maltreatment of domestic workers and caused considerable outrage. Posts using the hashtag #JusticeforIqra have received tens of millions of views.

The province of Punjab prohibits the employment of children under the age of 15 as domestic workers, while laws governing child labor can differ throughout the nation.

Sana, Iqra’s father, said, “I felt completely shattered inside when she died.”
