According to Sir Keir Starmer, a “US backstop” would be necessary for any peace agreement involving Ukraine in order to prevent Russia from striking its neighbor once more.
He stated that a “US security guarantee was the only way to effectively deter Russia” following a hurried meeting with European leaders in Paris. He also promised to meet with US President Donald Trump in Washington next week to discuss the “key elements” of a peace agreement.
In the event of a long-term peace deal, the prime minister reiterated that he would think about sending UK troops to Ukraine.
However, a significant NATO ally, Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz, stated that it was “completely premature” to propose sending soldiers to Ukraine at this time.
