The chancellor told the BBC that the UK’s trading relationship with the EU is “more important” than its relationship with the US.
Despite her current focus on talks with the US, Rachel Reeves indicated that a greater goal was to become closer to the EU on trade.
Reeves tweeted that the US and the UK desire a solution that is “in both our national interests” following her meeting with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Friday.
She hinted earlier this week that, as part of a larger agreement, the UK would reduce its 10% duty on US auto imports to 2.5%.
In an effort to “reset” its relationship, the UK is getting ready for a summit with the EU in May.
