The UK Border Force, which discovered 15 tonnes of cannabis in the mail during the last quarter of last year, was threatened by an increase in illicit shipments after Thailand decriminalized the drug in 2022.
Three months later, however, the number had fallen to 1.5 tons due to a new agreement that requires packages from Thailand to be inspected before being sent.
Seema Malhotra, the minister of borders, praised the agreement as a “prime example” of how international collaboration supports Labour’s “safer streets” agenda.
“We’re disrupting organized crime, safeguarding communities, and allowing Border Force to concentrate on other priorities by halting these drugs at their source.
“Together with our partners in Thailand, this government will continue to take tough action against those attempting to smuggle illegal drugs across our borders.”
