An unexpected guest joined the greeting party when Donald Trump arrived in Michigan on Tuesday for a visit that would culminate with a political event honoring his first 100 days in office. The first person waiting to greet the president on the tarmac was Democrat Gretchen Whitmer, the governor of Michigan.
Whitmer had been a harsh critic of Trump during the previous year’s presidential campaign. She referred to the candidate as “that man from Mar-a-Lago” and accused him of being out of touch with American voters in a well-publicized address at the Democratic National Convention in August.
In Michigan, Whitmer hesitantly extended his hand to shake Trump’s as he descended the stairs. However, Trump went in to embrace him, and Whitmer uncomfortably gave him a few pats on the back in return.
