Key political allies have endorsed Gen. Assimi Goïta, Mali’s military leader, to be sworn in as president for the next five years.
Following his most recent coup in 2021, the 41-year-old, who has taken over twice, was appointed transitional president.
In a setback to attempts to reinstate multi-party government in the West African state, he later broke his pledge to organize elections the following year.
Leading opposition parties boycotted a national convention organized by the regime, which now suggests appointing Gen. Goïta as president until 2030.
