The African nation’s tourism body has inked a deal with another elite European football team, while Arsenal supporters are still demonstrating against the club’s sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda.
The men’s and women’s teams of Spanish powerhouse Atletico Madrid will wear the Visit Rwanda emblem on their shirts starting in the upcoming season as part of a three-year agreement.
Following a surge in violence in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where authorities report 7,000 deaths since January, attention has turned to Rwanda’s long-standing alliances with Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Paris St-Germain.
Rwanda is accused by the Congolese government of providing M23 rebels with weapons and dispatching troops to aid the terrorists. In spite of claims made by the United States and the United Nations, Rwanda has denied backing the M23.
