On Sunday, Bangladesh released new banknotes that replaced those with images of the country’s founding president, the father of the overthrown prime minister Sheikh Hasina from the previous year.
The 170 million-person South Asian country has been governed by a caretaker government since Hasina fled and her trial began on Sunday. She was accused of attempting to put an end to the August 2024 revolt against her administration.
Her father, the late Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who led Bangladesh from independence from Pakistan in 1971 until he and the majority of his family were slain by soldiers in a 1975 coup, was shown on all notes up until this point.
