LONDON: Using government statistics, AFP estimates that 1,194 migrants arrived in the UK on Saturday after traveling over the Channel in small boats, setting a record for the year.
Despite a number of steps taken by the governments of France and the United Kingdom to reduce the number of migrant crossings, it increases the total number this year to 14,808, a historic number.
Between late Friday and late Saturday, approximately 200 migrants were also rescued, according to French coastal authorities.
The most recent crossings, dubbed “shocking” by UK Defence Secretary John Healey, are less than the record of 1,300 migrants arriving on tiny boats in a single day in September 2022.
