KARACHI: Noor Mukadam’s school classmate Shafaq Zaidi responded to the Supreme Court’s May 20 decision, which upheld Noor’s killer Zahir Jaffer’s life sentence and death penalty, by saying, “It’s brought me some closure.”
While Zaidi told IPS over the phone from Islamabad, “Noor cannot be brought back, but this decision offers a sense of justice — not just for her, but for every woman in Pakistan who has been told her life doesn’t matter.” “Four years of fighting through the sessions court, high court, and finally the Supreme Court has been a long and painful journey.”
Similar sentiments were expressed by rights campaigner Zohra Yusuf, who stated, “It’s satisfying that the Supreme Court upheld the verdict,” but noted that there wasn’t much hope for relief due to the ferocity of the murder.
