KABUL: Abdul Saboor always buys his kids new clothes for the Eid ul Adha holiday, but this year, like many Afghan public sector employees, he is barely making ends meet while waiting for his income to arrive.
Since regaining power in 2021, the Taliban administration has repeatedly struggled to pay governmental officials, leaving households in one of the poorest nations in the world struggling with financial instability.
“We bought only cookies and dried fruits for Eid,” Saboor added, adding that they would be shared with friends who were spending the holiday.
Eid ul Adha, which starts on Saturday, is one of the most important days in the Muslim calendar. To honor Prophet Ibhrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son, family, neighbors, and the poor share an animal sacrifice.
