KARACHI: Over the course of the three days of Eid ul Adha, at least ten additional inmates who had fled during a jailbreak that was sparked by an earthquake in the port city have returned to Landhi Jail in Malir district, authorities said on Tuesday.
When the District Malir Jail in Karachi was evacuated due to an earthquake, at least 213 prisoners managed to escape. According to reports, the event happened when prisoners were moved into the open courtyard for protection due to vibrations. The situation, however, became unmanageable during the chaos, allowing hundreds to escape.
Some inmates returned willingly, while others were arrested, according to Jail Superintendent Shahab Siddiqui.
According to the official, the return of the prisoners raises the total number of recovered escapees to 149, with 66 still evading capture.
