Following a period of interim unelected governance following the overthrow of then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024 due to student-led upheaval, Bangladesh’s de facto premier announced Friday that the country will conduct a national election in the first half of April 2026.
Since Hasina fled to India in August amid fatal public protests against her government, the 173 million-person South Asian nation has been governed by the administration of Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus.
However, there has also been significant unhappiness with Yunus’ government in recent weeks. Last month, protests erupted over requests for wages and directives pertaining to firing public employees for misbehavior without following drawn-out procedures.
