OTTAWA: In light of the existing tense relations between Canada and India, Sikh organizations in Canada have harshly criticized Prime Minister Mark J. Carney’s decision to invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the upcoming G7 summit in Alberta, calling the move absurd.
Despite tensions between the two nations, the invitation—which was made during a recent phone conversation and subsequently verified by Modi on social media—represents a significant diplomatic gesture.
“Happy to receive a call from Prime Minister Mark J. Carney of Canada,” the Indian prime minister said on his “X” handle. thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month and congratulated him on his recent election victory.
