On Thursday, Malaysia’s communications regulator announced that it had secured an interim court order against Telegram, a messaging app, and two of its channels for allegedly spreading illegal content.
According to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, Telegram’s “serious failure to address content that has been repeatedly reported to it” prompted the creation of the court order.
The two Telegram channels, Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas, were accused of having “the potential to undermine public trust in national institutions and disrupt societal harmony” due to their content.
According to the commission, a Malaysian high court issued an interim restraining order to stop the harmful content from spreading and to stop similar content from being republished.
