As the Gulf country where he had sought asylum became increasingly hostile, work on construction sites in Tehran ceased, and he was suspected of espionage, Afghan national Enayatullah Asghari watched in dismay as Israel and Iran launched strikes on one another last month.
The 35-year-old Asghari is one of tens of thousands of Afghans that Iran has sent home in recent weeks as part of a fight that the UN claims might further destabilize Afghanistan, which is already dealing with a humanitarian catastrophe.
Asghari concluded his family’s arduous trek back to western Afghanistan by saying, “It is difficult to even find a place to rent, and if you find one, the price is unaffordable… and there is no work at all.”
